Point Pleasant shop offers vintage clothing, collectibles
By DAVID P. WILLIS • BUSINESS WRITER • October 12, 2009
The bug hit Tony and Michelle Nugent back in the 1990s when the couple sold some family belongings at the Golden Nugget flea market outside of Lambertville.
"People were flocking the table and were were like, "Wow, this is fun,' " said Tony Nugent. "We sold everything, and we said, "Let's go find some more stuff on our own.' "
The couple own Under the Sun Furnishings on Bridge Avenue in Point Pleasant, which sells new and vintage clothing as well as furniture, gifts and accessories. They moved the business earlier this year from Asbury Park to Point Pleasant.
Their experience in Lambertville infused a passion for selling and finding treasures. Before becoming their own bosses, Tony Nugent, 47, was a house painter, and Michelle Nugent, 44, worked at a medical device manufacturing plant in Wall as an inspector.
"It's kind of a fun business because you're going out and you're hunting for things," Tony Nugent said. "It's a little bit of a gamble. Sometimes you go out and you don't find anything, and sometimes you go out and find some really good stuff."
They started the business, formerly called New to You Collectibles around 1995, selling vintage and antique items. The Nugents sold at flea markets and antique cooperatives such as Casey's Alley in Manasquan and the Point Pavilion Antiques Center in Point Pleasant Beach.
They moved to an antique center on Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park and decided to change the name of the business to Under the Sun Furnishings in 2005. They were just looking for a change, Michelle Nugent said.
"People would say you have a little bit of everything," Tony Nugent said. "Under the Sun seemed to fit a little better."
They later moved across the street to the Shoppes at the Arcade, a collection of stores in a revamped building on Cookman.
"It had such a buzz about it," Michelle Nugent said.
The business started well there, and they held events such as parties and art shows to attract customers. But the shop suffered as the economy started to sour.
The Nugents moved the business to Point Pleasant around June. They had sold their home in Asbury Park and lived in Bradley Beach before moving their residence to Brick last December.
